Epistrophe is the repetition of <strong>the last word or phrase <\/strong>across successive phrases, clauses, or sentences. Example from <strong><em>The Bible<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cWhen I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.\u201d<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"ub_styled_list_item\" style=\"\" id=\"ub-styled-list-item-4d61b4d4-7b14-454b-87d2-65d48371e14d\"><strong>Symploce<\/strong> \u2013 The <strong>combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/litdevices.com\/anaphora\/\">anaphora<\/a> and epistrophe<\/strong>. One word or phrase is repeated at the beginning and another at the end of successive phrases, clauses, or sentences. <strong>Example<\/strong>: \u201cWhen there is talk of hatred, let us stand up and talk against it. When there is talk of violence, let us stand up and talk against it.\u201d \u2013 Bill Clinton<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"ub_styled_list_item\" style=\"\" id=\"ub-styled-list-item-bc10a93c-29bf-4be9-b739-5ef7a14aa58b\"><strong>Antanaclasis<\/strong> \u2013 The <strong>repetition of a word <\/strong>but using<strong> a different meaning each time<\/strong>. From the Greek \u201cto bend back.\u201d Example: Benjamin Franklin \u2013 \u201cYour <a href=\"https:\/\/litdevices.com\/argument\/\">argument<\/a> is sound, nothing but sound.\u201d<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"ub_styled_list_item\" style=\"\" id=\"ub-styled-list-item-5d7feeae-c4c3-4414-90c9-ad3b1c154c79\"><strong>Antistasis<\/strong> \u2013 When <strong>antanaclasis incorporates different, or opposite, meanings<\/strong>. <strong>Example<\/strong>: Benjamin Franklin \u2013 \u201cWe must, indeed, all<strong> hang<\/strong> together, or assuredly we shall all<strong> hang <\/strong>separately.\u201d Basically, the two meanings are we can all work together, or we can all fail individually.<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"ub_styled_list_item\" style=\"\" id=\"ub-styled-list-item-e7e92fce-74ba-450e-a962-9ede00188aca\"><strong>Negative-Positive Restatement<\/strong> \u2013 Popular in speeches, this type of repetition <strong>makes a similar statement twice<\/strong> \u2013 first negatively, then positively. A <strong>famous example<\/strong> from John F. Kennedy is: \u201dAsk not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.\u201d<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"ub_styled_list_item\" style=\"\" id=\"ub-styled-list-item-30ff30bd-bc32-48f3-a657-f8496a56cea4\"><strong>Epizeuxis (a.k.a. palilogia)<\/strong> \u2013 The simple repetition of a word or phrase in immediate succession.
